Ready to Eat
Should I thank you for being ungrateful?
But it taught me to be kind
To receive that which was given to me
With thanksgiving
I savoured meal after meal
In the light of your ingratitude
Do you taste the strife to please
In what you’re served
Oh but how can you
When it tastes so sweet
When the effort is immaculate
Cooked to perfection
In our unawareness
We’ll cease to forget
That we’re the ones who hunger and thirst
After that which is not ours
Which we did not work for
Together we’ll try three times a day
Some days maybe even more
To hold back a word of appreciation
Or a word of thankfulness
Not because we don’t have the time
Or because we have too much on our minds
Or the fact we’ve lost our appetites
But because we’ve forgotten
We are strengthened
We are nourished
Our hearts are full
Yet so empty
